It's Thanksgiving time, which means it's time to take stock of the blessings you have in life. From a healthy and happy family, to a safe home or even a recent promotion, there is so much to be thankful for and it's so important that parents encourage gratitude in children at young ages.

You can be told about how to deal with almost everything, but living through everything you have been told how to deal with is quite a different story. Then there are the things that defy description. There are sorrows that have no words that offer proper definition. There are fears that keep you up deep into the night and steal sleep from you with constant regularity. Amongst the turmoil there are joys that wash away the pain and make life truly worth living. In the past few years I have experienced all of these things. I have held a child that bore my name and look exactly like me as he painfully passed from this life to the next. I have felt the strain of having to support my family through a high-risk pregnancy being the sole breadwinner. I have held a newborn baby girl in my arms, and just a few weeks ago watched her turn one year old. When reflecting upon what I am grateful for I must admit I have no lack of material this year. Watching my baby girl walking since she was just eleven months old hash made my heart swell with pride. Seeing her explore this life, with everything being new for her is endlessly amazing to behold. Watching my father act like a kid, something I have never seen before, bring a grin to my lips every time I see him with my daughter. How could I not be grateful for such gifts? To tell you the truth though I am grateful for it all, the elation as well as the sadness. Who are we but the sum of our combined experiences on this earth? To quote Curtis “50 cent” Jackson, “Sunny days wouldn’t be so special, if it wasn’t for rain. Joy wouldn’t feel so special, if it wasn’t for pain. Death gotta’ be easy because life is hard. It will leave you emotionally, mentally, and physically scarred.” I think he is onto something there. So this thanksgiving I am grateful for all the agony and the ecstasy life brings me, because it means that I am living.

I'm thankful for a lot of things this year but most importantly my life and my family. This has been one of the toughest years of my life, we lost my aunt this year and my grandmother has been very sick, but throughout it all I still have my family and I'm still alive! What better to be thankful for than life itself?!
