Raising kids raises questions. We have expert answers. So go ahead, ask away!
Using a time out as a form of discipline is only effective if parents are able to help their child focus on the lesson. Meaning, when a child hits a sibling or behaves in an innappropriate way resulting in a time out, it's important that parents help their child understand they're not being punished according to a time, they're being punished so that they can reflect and think about their behavior. When the time out is over, Dr. Ann Corwin suggests parents discuss what happened so that the child learns and understands their behavior better (next time).
Do you use time out? Is it effective?
