Moms don't get sick days: So what happens when swine flu hits home?
- Romi Lassally
Leslie Morgan Steiner wrote a great piece in Mommytracked this week, "Why I want the swine flu." In it, she avoids the usual "to vaccinate or not to vaccinate debate" and there's nary a mention of contagion control (only one line about hand sanitizer!). Instead, she hits another issue head on -- how truly disruptive it can be when mom goes down with an illness and suggests that the "disruption" would be less so if she/we could "schedule it in." Well how about that.
With the rapidly spreading virus making it's way across the country, Leslie imagines it's only a matter of time before the piggie flu as she calls it, seeps into her home. She takes this further -- fessing up to a universal working mother's nightmare: when it does hit home, it will be the worst of all possible times -- her husband will be out of town, all babysitters will be unavilable and business obligations and work deadlines will come and go unfulfilled. Basically, the fever and chills of the flu will pale in comparrison to the havoc a sick mother will wreak upon her work/family life.
As Leslie so perfectly states: "The bedrock of being a good mom while simultaneously meeting work obligations lies in careful forecasting and plotting to steer clear of unnecessary drama, conflicts and suffering."
In this case, swine flu stopping by for an unscheduled visit will shake this bedrock down. So I'm with Leslie in saying "bring it on. Let's just get it over with."
How about you? if you could "schedule in the swine" would you??
