The holidays are a perfect time to teach children about helping out others in need, especially as they get showered with gifts themselves. Letting children see the effect of giving and learning how to put themselves in another person's shoes is a valuable life lesson. Today, Dr. Ann Corwin explains how teach children to be empathetic using the "Give to Get" rule.

I find this concept strange. My kids value their possessions and to give them away is like giving away a part of themselves. We donated money to Heifer International last year while we all gathered around and discussed how much of a difference a rabbit, goat, or crate of bees makes in the lives of those in impoverished countries. This year my kids want to give to Smile Train, an organization that repairs cleft palettes.
