We adopt a family who does not have anything and make their Christmas merry. We take time also to realize what we have, and why that is something to be grateful for. We give thanks daily.

My kids learn about value throughout the year, as we regularly discuss the consequence of spending too much on things. We always look for the best deals and distinguish between good quality and bad. Christmas simply carries these values forward, as we focus most intently on our family's traditions and treasure our time spent together, like Lara mentioned in her comment.

I think you definitely can spoil your kids at Christmas, because that teaches them that what Christmas is about, the presents, rather than the birth of Jesus or being kind to fellow man. I think focusing on why we celebrate Christmas and focusing on the traditions and time spent together is more important than the presents. I honestly don't remember many of my presents but I do remember that we always decorated the tree together and my mom made it special by getting sparkling apple cider and making it into an event. I do remember when I was finally tall enough to put the topper on the tree, that was special. For gifts my husband and I try to focus on giving experiences, like tickets to the zoo or a special hike. www.redearthsafari.blogspot.com
