Raising kids raises questions. We have answers. So go ahead, ask!
What happens if your child is taking an activity that he doesn't want to follow up on? Do you let them walk away or do you force them to continue doing something just because "you made a commitment?" Today, Parents Ask expert Betsy Brown Braun, author of "You're Not the Boss of Me," gives expert advice on how to handle a child who wants to quit. Tips are given on how to negotiate with a child so that they can learn that keeping commitments are important.
Betsy says, "Making commitment to activity in schedule is important!"
-A child should not be allowed to quit.
-A child needs to understand what activity entails (the schedule required, the practice required) and follow through!
But... What if the child is miserable and utterly tortured by their commitment?!
-Level with them!
-Explain that they've signed up for this activity, and so they'll see this session through. But next time, they won't sign up.
- This is wonderful lesson in commitment and follow through!
