Raising kids raises questions. We have expert answers. So go ahead, ask away!
Ah, the C word. Colic.... After my son was born, the first few days at the hospital, all seemed calm. He barely made a peep and seemed like a little angel. "How quiet he is," everyone marveled. "Not a fussy baby at all," they'd say. "You're so lucky. He doesn't have colic."
Phew. I had heard of colic. In fact, I apparently had it when I was a baby.
But those first three days, my baby still in a womb induced haze, seemed to be colic and fuss free.
Then we got home. Cue the crying.
I researched colic and came up with these three questions pointing to this horrible affliction:
Does your baby spend a lot of time crying?
Check.
Does your baby cry for no apparent reason?
Check.
Do the outbursts appear totally random?
Check.
However, as our expert Ann Douglas explains today, the difference between a "normal- will I ever sleep again, get my breasts and body back, why doesn't my husband know how to hold a bottle properly-baby" are three key things:
1) Baby cries at least 3 hours each day
2) Occurs at least 3 times each week
3) Lasts for at least 3 weeks
4) Wraps up within 3 months.
The good news, the amount of crying peaks at around 6 weeks of age. The bad news, those first six (ish) weeks are the hardest.
As it turns out, my son didn't have colic at all. He was just a baby. And sometimes a fussy one. So all I can say is, hold on tight and cry with your baby if you need to. It may feel like it, but it won't last forever.
