Raising kids raises questions. We have expert answers. So go ahead, ask away!

Staying fit during pregnancy is not only important healthwise, but it is important for women emotionally. But if you're pregnant, or have been pregnant, than you're well aware of the many myths and old wives-tales that are out there. One of the most common myths involves lifting heavy objects-- and how much a pregnant woman can carry. This myth often deters women from continuing an exercise regimen or starting a new one (even if it's "pregnancy friendly" like prenatal yoga). Today, Parents Ask expert and OB/GYN Dr. Jason Rothbart dispells any fears and sets the record straight on lifting weight(s) during pregnancy:
Q: If I get pregnant again, how much can I carry or lift? My 23 lb toddler needs my help going up and down the stairs, and in and out of her crib. But I'm scared this isn't okay. Also, I'd like to continue working out, but I'm worried that I may strain something. Please advise...
A: The take home message is that you cannot cause a miscarriage by lifting something heavy. That being said, if you try to lift something and you feel pulling or strain, then it is too heavy. You can absolutely lift and hold your toddler during pregnancy. Weight bearing exercises are okay as well but you have to pay attention to your body and do what is comfortable. Lifting weights is fine but you're not going to want to do any "dead lifting" or anything too jarring-- Again if you're pushing and straining, then it's too much.
Always talk to your doctor about starting or continuing an exercise regimen upon pregnancy. But in general, whatever shape you are in going into pregnancy, should determine the level of activity you may or may not be able to maintain throughout. I.E. if you haven't ever exercised a day in your life, this is not the time to start- don't go out and get a trainer. Walking for 20 minutes, three times a week would be fine. But if you're a marathon runner, and get pregnant, you can absolutely continue to run every day.
