Raising kids raises questions. We have expert answers. So go ahead, ask away!

Today's question on "How can I treat my child's constipation?" actually comes from me. After having to take my son to the ER a few months ago for serious constipation causing him to be inconsolable, I wanted to share the information I was given with our readers. Fortunately (and unfortunately), all serious problems were ruled out and the poor boy is just full of poop; we (he) will have to follow a strict diet (a long with some aids to help him pass the stools).
Here is the diet that the Pediatric Gastroenterologist recommends for children (and adults for that matter too) suffering from constipation:
AVOID: High Fiber Foods
-Bananas
-Rice
-Apples
-Applesauce
-Large Portions of Bread and Pastas
*Note- Despite contrary belief, whole wheat/high fiber pastas or brown rice can actually be binding for some children. Stick to the white noodles!
FOODS TO TREAT CONSTIPATION:
-Peaches
-Pears
-Plums
-Prunes
-Apricots
-Grapes
-Cherries
-Watermelon
-Blueberries
(Canned, dried or fresh: At least two portions of any of the fuits above)
Apple, white grape, prune, blueberry juices 1 -2 glasses/day (+water!)
Peach, pear, apricot nectars, gatorade
FOODS TO AVOID (and can cause pain):
-Beans
-Corn
-Broccoli
-Cabbage
-Cauliflower
-Nuts
-Granola
-Bell Peppers
-Onions
-Raisins
As always, consult your physician for any questions and concerns!
