According to a study last year put out by a British Medical Journal, giving babies Tylenol (or other acetaminophen products) before their scheduled vaccines isn't the best idea as it can reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine itself.

We asked our own Parents Ask expert, Dr. Cara Natterson her thoughts:

"Parents often want to give their children Tylenol just before or immediately after vaccinations. Usually, they see it as a preventive measure: “To take the edge off”. I always say that you never know if your child will need it. If a child develops fever or discomfort, then acetaminophen is appropriate. But using a medicine “just in case” isn’t typically recommended. Now it turns out that using that medicine just in case may reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines. Yet another reason to wait before dosing your child.
