Raising kids raises questions. We have expert answers. So go ahead, ask away!
I'm usually the first one to reach for an over the counter (or prescription!) remedy to almost any complaint from my kids. But in an attempt to save money, time and work with a natural alternative when available, i consulted my homeopathic muse Susan who shared her top 10 favorite home remedies for common ailments befalling kids.
1. Bee Stings: Baking soda and warm water are the ticket. Mix them into a paste, coat the area and then once it dries, use a credit card (yes a credit card - preferably a clean one!) to get the stinger out.
2. Pink Eye: Dip a q-tip in a slightly beaten egg white and line the bottom eyelid. *not recommended if you are allergic to eggs!
3. Cold & Congestion:
- 1/2 c. green apple juice, 1/4 c. fresh squeezed beet juice, 1/4 c. fresh squeezed ginger. Drinking this cocktail a few times a day should make your cold symptoms go away!
- Eucalyptus oil in steaming water in a bowl. Put your head over (not in!) the bowl and a towel over your head. Breathe!
4. Bruises, bumps or sore body parts: Arnica! Always and often.
5 Mild burns: Honey. Yep. Honey.
6. Sunburn: Fresh aloe does the trick to releive the sting!
7. Corns on your feet: Calendula *need to be diligent and repeat for 2 months!
8. Weak immune system: Elderberry syrup (yum)
9. Ear infection: Mullen oil PLUS tugging at the bottom of the earlobe 5 times, then flap the earlope 10 times after you put oil in it.
10. Hiccups: Put a spoon in a glass of water with the handle facing up. Drink the water with the handle touching your forehead and the hiccups should go away!
